Dr. Leila Mekacher

Head of Digital Research and Innovation, SRH Vocational Center Neckargemünd, Germany

Topic: Education 4.0: Hybrid Learning and Micro Learning in a Smart Environment

Dr. Leila Mekacher obtained her diploma engineering degree in electrical engineering and automation technology at the technical university of Kaiserslautern in Germany in 2005 and she received her doctorate in robotics and software engineering at the University of Mannheim in 2016. From 2006 to 2016 she was a research assistant and a member of the scientific staff at the Department of Automation, University of Heidelberg. From 2013-2015 she was the head of the research group “unmanned Aerial Vehicle” of the institute of computer Engineering at Heidelberg University and a scientific assistant of the research group “Dependable Robotics” (2010-2016). Since 2017 she is a science teacher as well as the founder and head of the Technological Education Centre at the Vocational Training Centre of the SRH in Neckargemünd. Furthermore, she is since 2018 a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University. For almost 20 years now, she has been working in various mentoring programs to promote young talent in the STEM world. She recently co-initiated and co-founded a campaign for women in STEM, which has been reported in various magazines and radio interviews and she got the title of “STEM Ambassador”.

She teaches and research interests include autonomous mobile robots, human-technology interaction, dependability and safety aspects in driver assistance systems, control engineering and process automation, real-time monitoring, and fault-detection mechanism for safety-critical systems. Another research field in which She has been working for many years is assistance systems for people with disabilities. She has researched rehabilitation robots e.g. on autonomous wheelchairs and she was a co-inventor of a patent for “View-based action control through adaptive recognition of natural object selection sequences” (DE102016009142A1). Her current research area is the didactic-methodical Integration of technologies in education, e.g. virtual and mixed reality for immersive interactive education. She focuses her research also on young people with special needs, autism, and significant social interaction difficulties. The findings from this research are also useful for the design of the workplaces of the future, where the human will be exposed to more Information than his brain can process at one time and therefore new strategies for information processing will be required.
