To cope with the pressure that students are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic, our forms of assessment require changes by introducing new forms of assessment that correlate with the new forms of blended/online delivery. One of these assessments is the flexible assessment when students will be given an opportunity to select the topic of assessment, the group, the implementation method, the timing, the type of feedback, etc.
We introduced a flexible/inclusive group assessment that allows students to select the method to present their work findings which better suit their learning styles and personalities. Students will work in groups of 5-6 each and they are required to select a topic to research and present. The general themes of the research topics will be given to students in advance. Research findings can be presented in one of the following formats, narrated PowerPoint, video, animation, poster, program.
The positive outcome of this new type of assessment is summarised in the points below:
- The key feature of this assessment is creativity. Students are required to be creative in presenting their findings. There will be marks allocated for creativity.
- Students will engage in a group work activity that develops their team working skills and enhance students’ engagement with their studies given the high interaction among students in a group setting.
- Students can work with colleagues that they feel comfortable working.
- Students take ownership of their learning given that they have to decide on the topic and the way of research and the method of presentation.
- Encourage peer learning which has been acknowledged in the literature as an effective method of learning.
